IN THE NEWS / 1st Japanese BBC reporter devoted to her work
Mariko Oi has worked as the first Japanese reporter for BBC World News since last year.
The 26-year-old Singapore-based journalist covers stories and conducts interviews concerning Asian economic issues.
So far, Oi has reported on issues ranging from Sanrio Co.'s business strategy to cash in on amusement and character goods, to research taking place in Singapore on a seaweed-derived biofuel that is an alternative to oil.
"I'd been longing to work for the BBC since I was 16 years old," Oi said.
When Oi was a high school student in Australia, she saw a BBC documentary program aired by a local broadcaster. While she could not fully understand English used in the program, it depicted emaciated children as part of a detailed report about starvation. Oi said she clearly remembers the image to this day.
After graduating from university, she worked for a major U.S.-based financial-information company.
However, as she preferred to be involved in journalism from the perspective of ordinary people, and not working on behalf of investors, she quit the organization and signed a contract with BBC World News.
While her colleagues' nationalities vary from Malaysian and Singaporean to American, they share a common passion for their work as journalists.
"With the power of imagery, I hope to provide interesting economic coverage to viewers who normally aren't interested in stock prices," she said.
