Radio Singapore International to stop transmission
Singapore, 3 June 2008 – MediaCorp will be shutting down the Radio Singapore International (RSI) shortwave service at the end of July 2008.
RSI was set up in 1994 by the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation and aimed at reaching out to the region and helping Singaporeans overseas keep pace with developments in the Republic.
The effectiveness of a short wave radio service has diminished over time with changing technology and media consumption habits.
While FM radio broadcast has remained strong, audiences are turning to a plethora of channels for their news, e.g. internet radio and the world-wide web. More people around the region are also tuning into MediaCorp’s Channel NewsAsia (International) feed for news and information on global developments with Asian perspectives.
From this perspective, it is not optimal to continue with a full regional radio service broadcasting in 4 languages (English, Chinese, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia).
MediaCorp will be redeploying all RSI staff to other areas, including retraining some for new duties.
